APWEN harps on Girl Child education for betterment of society

The President of the Lagos State chapter of the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigera (APWEN), Engr. Monsurah Abimbola Alagbe, has said the Association would continue to be an advocate of Girl Child Education towards the betterment of the society.

She also said APWEN would continue to educate and encourage Girl Child towards career option in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) while facilitating trainings and workshops for the great people, our teachers nurturing the girls towards this advocacy.

According to her, APWEN is a non-governmental and non-profit making professional body that was formed over 40 years ago by six visionary and passionate female Engineers in order to show the way for excellence in engineering profession in our nation.

She said the vision of the Association was to be the catalyst for advancement of women in the Engineering profession towards National and Global Technological development while the mission is: to encourage women to achieve professional excellence as engineers and leaders; enhance the image of the engineering profession as a positive force in enhancing the quality of life by pressing for progress; and continuously increase awareness that engineering is a career for girls, thereby increasing the numerical strength of female engineers, and that they can excel as female Engineers in Nigeria, and elsewhere.

In her presentation on Innovation for Sustainable Development, the Guest Speaker, Engr. (Dr.) Felicia Nnenna Agubata, said the sectors where sustainable innovations could aid in its development included: Energy; Agriculture; Waste Management; Health and Medicare; Transportation; Finance and Investment.

Engr. Agubata stated that International Days are occasions to educate the general public on issues of concerns, to mobilize political will and resources to address global problems, and to celebrate and reinforce achievements of humanity.

Stating that gender gap has persisted throughout the years at all levels of STEM disciplines all over the world, Agubata said women and girls represented half of the world’s population.

She defined Innovation for Sustainable Development as the application of new ideas, technologies and processes that contribute to a more sustainable future, adding that this could include the development of new products, services, or products tht are more environmentally-friendly, resource efficient, and socially responsible.

“Innovation for Sustainable Development can take many forms, including technological developments, new business models, and changes in behavior and attitudes. It can also involve collaboration between different actors, including governments, the private sector, and civil society”, Engr. Agubata added.
