Cyril Mbah, Abuja
The Turaki-led Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), has described President Bola Tinubu’s extended vacation and absence at the United Nations General Assembly, (UNGA), as an unacceptable abdication of presidential mandate that requires the President should resign honourably.
In a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the Interim National Working Committee, Comrade Ini Ememobong Essien, the party in reacting to a statement by Presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, announcing the extension said the State House announcement of the holiday extension was “as disappointing as it is insulting to Nigerians.”
The PDP said the statement is disappointing because no reasonable parent or caretaker goes on vacation when his house is burning, adding that the tone of the announcement suggests Nigerians should not question why the President should be held accountable.
The party reminded the President and the Presidency that Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu sought for the job and by being sworn in, became a servant ofvthe people and not a lord or master of the country adding that all Nigerians have the right to question how he governs them.
The PDP said the statement issued by the Presidency was issued in utmost bad faith and added that it is necessary to question why the President will be going on vacation at a time when insecurity is on a steady rise, macroeconomic indices are looking bleak and citizens are fed daily with renewed hopelessness.
The PDP noted that since the President went on holiday in Europe, it was expected he would proceed from there to America for UNGA, unarguably the biggest gathering of world leaders, since the distance would be shorter.
It argued that the President and the Presidency seem to suggest that the President is at liberty to determine which tasks he handles and from where, adding that there is no greater insult to the presidential mandate than such attitude.
According to the statement, if the President is not in Nigeria solving problems, he should be at UNGA seeking international help, but “he is instead lounging in a country whose president is at UNGA while his handlers question the rights of employers to demand accountability.”
The party called on Nigerians to note the disrespect and disdain served by the Presidency for asking questions, saying it must guide choices at the ballot in January during presidential elections because the country needs a President ready, willing and able to work locally and internationally.
