The National Chairman of the Interim National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party, Barr. Kabiru Turaki, SAN, has reiterated the critical roles women play in the success of political parties and elections in Nigeria, while lamenting the lack of reciprocity in the reward system for them.
Turaki stated this while delivering his goodwill message at the launch of a book ‘Rising Beyond Borders,’ by Dame Esther Uduehi to mark the 30th anniversary of the League of Women Voters of Nigeria.
Dame Uduehi is a member of the Board of Trustees of the Peoples Democratic Party.
According to the PDP Chairman, the fact that women have remained critical partners in every political victory, either at party or general election levels, is incontestable.
He said the challenge is usually with the disproportionate reward system, which does not exactly reflect the input made by women.
Turaki said he was happy to be celebrating Dame Uduehi, who has been a frontline female advocate and mobiliser in the country, describing her as a firm and consistent voice championing women’s issues which led to her founding of the League of Women Voters of Nigeria.
He described the League as a legacy worth protecting, adding, “I, on behalf of my family and the PDP family, congratulate her on this momentous occasion and pray God to continually bless her. I must also commend the women who have continued the cause of women’s advancement in our country, especially in the political space. My charge to you is to keep the flag flying,” he said.
Turaki also commended Dame Uduehi’s immense contribution to the PDP, especially at this time of the party’s internal struggles.
He said it takes a person of conviction and integrity to stand up for the truth and forsake the trappings of deceit and betrayal offered by those seeking to destroy the party, noting that her stance is an example for younger women to emulate.
“I am happy that she is alive to hear the many good things that have been said here today about her, not at her funeral,” he added.
The event took place at the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS), in Abuja and had in attendance distinguished Nigerians including Prof. Sulieman Abubakar, NILDS Director-General; Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi, Esq., former Director of Legal Services, INEC; Hajiya Zainab Maina; and Hajiya Inna Ciroma, among others.
