Oxfam, Ngo Advocate Gender Equality, Women Empowerment

OXFAM Nigeria, and a non governmental organisation, Liberate the Women Initiative have called for equal and fair treatment of women and people living with disability in the society.

The organisations have also charged women to be productive and not to rely on men for their living for a better society.

The Programme Manager for Gender Justice at OXFAM, Helen Akinyemi who spoke to newsmen at the Community-based Assembly Workshop in Abuja, said the feminist organisation was posed to raise consciousness and influence attitude for equal rights of women, girls and people with disability in the society.

Part of the organisation’s strategies, she said was gathering women from different groups from all parts of the country to share their experiences regarding issues of gender inequality and analyse the shared experience in a gender progressive perspective.

The programme manager said the event was an informal gathering, adding that the purpose was to influence attitude to address inequality.

She urged stakeholders to use gender transformative approach to tackle inequality for sustainability and not cash or material empowerment.

The programme manager also used the occasion to call on other relevant  authorities to join hands with OXFAM to end violence against women and girls in the country.

On her part, the founder of Liberate Women Initiative, Ambassador Tobichukwu Princess urged women to be focused, self reliance and engage in trade that would earn them a living.

Ambassador Princess, who said her foundation’s goal is to liberate women from poverty, laziness, domestic violence and others, enjoined women not to leave family responsibilities to men alone but do soothing to assist them.
