NPC chairman urges Tinubu to prioritise census for effective planning, development.

National Population Commission Chairman, Alhaji Nasir Isa Kwarra has advised President Ahmed Bola Tinubu to conduct the national census at the shortest period possible to avert huge loss to the nation and the aimless drift in planning due to insufficient demographic data for national development.
The chairman said prolonging the date for the census, which has been shifted three times, will result in huge loss to the nation as preparations already completed would be discarded and started afresh.
Isa Kwarra said emphatically that the NPC has reached more than 85% readiness in its preparation for the census before it was halted and would be glad to promptly deploy men and materials to the field at short notice whenever the president gives the directive for the census to commence.
The chairman made these remarks while interacting with newsmen at the University of Abuja when he attended the 41st Inaugural Lecture of the institution with the theme: “The paradox of population growth in national development,” delivered by Professor Rhoda Yohanna Mundi, a professor of geography who specialised in population and development.
According to the chairman “Except the census takes place in the shortest period, we would have to start our preparations all over again and this means spending enormous amounts of money to do what we have already done. It is necessary that we put our acts together and kickoff the census without further delay.
“On our part, the NPC is ready to move to the field at any time. The census is very important because no matter how accurate a data can be, except it is accept by Nigerians, it will not be valuable.
“We want the new administration to settle down, look at the work we have done already and give us a new date for the census. As far as preparation is concerned, we have done more than 85% and we are only waiting for the signal to commence the census,” the chairman said.
Earlier, the inaugural lecturer, Professor Mundi, who dwelt on the implications of not having proper headcount for national development and the advantages of correct demographic data to planning, stated that any nation which plans blindly without correct population figures, plans to fail.
Professor Mundi appealed to President Tinubu to ensure the enthronement of good governance in the country by getting things right from the beginning with the conduct of the national census.
“Let the president conduct the national population and housing census by first releasing the necessary funds for the exercise. When we have an acceptable census, then it would be easier to track development and growth nationwide.
“The implementation of the census needs funding and having the headcount will help the government tract the success of other policies and programmes lined up for the people and the nation,” Mundi argued.
Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja, Professor Abdul Rasheed Na’Allah in an opening remark commended the doggedness of the inaugural lecturer in conducting research into population matters and also urged the Federal Government to heed the advice of the specialist and conduct the census in the nearest future.
