NEMA mulls introduction of Disaster Management in school curriculum

According to the agency higher institution of learning should make this a compulsory thing to do, and also called on Nigerians to adhere strictly to the directives of the Federal Ministry of Health and National Center for Disease Control on prevention of Corona Virus, Lassa fever and other epidemic disease.

Evans Ugoh NEMA head of Imo/Abia Operations office made the proposal during a joint disaster stakeholders meeting organized by NEMA.

Ugoh while addressing participants of the joint meeting said the call to introduce disaster management in school curriculum became necessary following rising incidences of disaster in the country.

According to him, if disaster management is part of universities and polytechnics degree and diploma causes, it would help in facilitating efficiency in disaster management.

On the much dreaded Corona Virus, the NEMA official said federal government through the health ministry and center for disease control was doing enough to prevent the spread of the virus, but warned that Nigerian must adhere to medical directives.

He commended the Director General of NEMA for facilitating seminars and workshops at the zonal and state level to enhance efficiency in disaster management.

Some the participants who spoke in the event called for effective communication among disaster stakeholder, while also identifying poor staff attitude to work as major challenge against disaster management.

They also urged government agencies with more heavy equipments to be part of disaster stakeholders, while also advocating for MoU with private companies for timely assistance during emergency.

Among those who participated in the programme were representatives of Federal Road safety Corps (FRSC), Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and Red Cross Society of Nigeria.

Others were State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Center for Communication, Ministry of Health and Department of Petroleum Resources.
