IMSU  VC calls for increased  budgetary  allocation on education sector

Following the fallen standard of education in the country, the acting Vice Chancellor  of Imo State University Owerri   Prof. Peter Akah, called on the Federal Government to  consider increasing it’s  budgetary allocation on    education

Professor Akah,  said this while addressing newsmen after receiving an award of Excellence In Leadership from the Pan-African Association of Scholars of Humanities And Social Sciences (PASHASS) in Owerri on Monday.

Akah, a Consultant Pharmacologist with the United Nations Development Programme ,

He noted that only 2.6 per cent of the year 2022 budget had been allocated to the Education sector rather than the 26 per cent approved by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

The Vice Chancellor, who is a consultant pharmarcologist  to the United Nations Education , Scientific and Cultural Organization  (UNESCO), believed that improved funding for the sector would take care of owed allowances and entitlements of lecturers in the various Universities in the country

He however urged PASHASS not to relent in identifying Pan-African scholars scattered across the globe and bringing them together for the development of academics in Africa.

 ” UNESCO recommended a minimum of 26 per cent budgetary allocation to education but what we have in the proposed year 2022 budget is 2.6 per cent ; this is a far cry and we can do better to improve the sector. he emphasized

 “Wealth is gradually going intellectual and my advice is that you continue to bring pan-african scholars together so that we can develop our continent and the world at large “, he  further said.

 Earlier while presenting the award, Prof. Abah Ikwue of the Alvan Ikoku College of Education, the PASHASS President, extolled the hard-work and commitment to duty of the recipient in his more than three decades of teaching.

 According to  him “We followed Prof. Akah from the University of Nigeria Nsukka  UNN where he worked for several years before coming to Imo and three professors who are also members of the association nominated him”

Presenting  the  award, he  said  “on behalf of the association, I hand over this award to Prof. Akah, an erudite leader in recognition of his  excellence in leadership “
