The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt.-Gen. Waidi Shaibu, has reaffirmed the Nigerian Army’s unwavering commitment to supporting civil authorities in the discharge of their constitutional responsibilities.
Shaibu gave the assurance on Wednesday in Abuja while receiving Gov. Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi, who paid a courtesy visit to the Army Headquarters.
The COAS also reaffirmed the army’s commitment to deepen partnership with the state government, saying the completion of the newly established Nigerian Army Depot in the state would significantly boost manpower training, capacity development and operational effectiveness.
He disclosed that the passing-out ceremony of recruits trained at the depot would be held in Abakaliki, describing the development as a reflection of the state’s growing strategic importance to the army.
Shaibu urged the state government to intensify public sensitisation to encourage citizens to support the military with timely and credible intelligence, stressing that community cooperation remained critical to addressing security challenges nationwide.
He also called on the governor to motivate eligible youths in Ebonyi State to enlist in the Nigerian Army, adding that increased participation would further strengthen national security.
He appealed for similar advocacy to be extended to other South-East governors to promote wider regional participation in military service.
In his remarks, Nwifuru congratulated Shaibu on his appointment as COAS and praised the Nigerian Army for its sustained support to internal security operations in the state.
The governor described the establishment of the Nigerian Army Depot in Ebonyi as a strategic intervention that had enhanced security and improved operational readiness.
He reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to continued collaboration with the Army, noting that Ebonyi State had remained free of kidnapping incidents and “sit-at-home” disruptions.
According to him, the prevailing peace and stability in the state are attributable to the proactive and professional conduct of Nigerian Army personnel.
Nwifuru also appealed for the completion of the Nigerian Army Reference Hospital in Abakaliki, saying the facility would serve Ebonyi State and neighbouring states in the South-East and South-South regions.
He assured the Army of the state government’s readiness to further deepen partnership in the interest of sustained peace, security and development. (NAN)
