Twenty-four hours after the protest carried out by aggrieved traders at the popular Onitsha drug market, (Ogbogwu), in which one person was allegedly killed and five others sustained various degrees of injuries, the state Police Commissioner, Nnanna Oji Ama, on Thursday summoned the Onitsha Police Area Commander and all the Divisional Police Officers (DPOs within Onitsha environs for emergency security meeting.
The high-level supervisory security meeting, it was gathered sequel to the incident that occurred on Wednesday at Bridgehead Onitsha.
The meeting, according to the state Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga (SP), formed part of the Commissioner’s ongoing efforts to strengthen operational supervision, accountability and professionalism within the Command, particularly in Onitsha, one of the State’s major commercial centres.
During the meeting, CP Nnanna directed the DPOs to provide detailed briefings on the security situation and policing activities within their respective areas of responsibility, with particular emphasis on measures being taken to prevent and address unprofessional conduct by officers and men under their command.
Recall that during the protest, the ever-busy Onitsha/Asaba expressway was barricaded by aggrieved protesting traders that resulted in traffic gridlock for about an hour.
Travelers were held within this period thereby keeping them stranded and tear gas cannisters used by the police which worsened the situation as whoever that was within the scene was fleeing for safety.
The Commissioner of Police who rushed to the seen visited the injured in their hospitals and assured of paying their hospital bills.
