*NSE Ikeja puts energy security and climate action at centre of 2026 Engineering Week as Olorunfemi Colloquium opens Tuesday*
The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) Ikeja Branch opened its 2026 Engineering Week, Exhibition and Annual General Meeting on Monday with a clear focus on energy security and climate-responsive solutions, setting the stage for Tuesday’s high-profile 5th Ademola Olorunfemi Colloquium on renewable energy and climate change.
Branch Chairman Engr. Nimot Muili, FNSE, FINEE, FNICE, PMP, declared the week open, stressing that reliable, affordable and responsibly produced energy is fundamental to Nigeria’s competitiveness, human development and social stability. She linked the overarching theme — “Transformative Engineering for Energy Security and Sustainable Developmental Impact” — to the urgent need to move beyond pilot projects toward resilient, maintainable and inclusive systems that can be scaled using local skills, standards and investment confidence.
The centrepiece of the technical programme is the 5th Ademola Isaac Olorunfemi Colloquium, themed “Renewable Energy & Climate Change: Opportunities and Challenges.” It holds on Tuesday, 25 August 2026, at the Olu Awoyinfa Hall, NSE Ikeja Secretariat, Plot 32, Oba Ogunji Road, Agege, Lagos, from 10:00 a.m. Participants can also join via Zoom, with the event streamed on the NSE Ikeja Branch YouTube channel.
Keynote speaker is Engr. Olufemi Dosumu, FNIAE, FNSE, FAEng, Managing Director/Chief Executive of Florenben Group. The President and Chairman-in-Council of the NSE, Engr. Ali Alimasuya Rabiu, FNSE, FASCE, FAEng, MFR, will chair the occasion.
Discussants include Dr. Kingsley Akinroye, Executive Director of the Nigeria Heart Foundation; Engr. Abdullahi Sesan Olowa, Executive Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area; Engr. Olufemi Dare, Lagos State Controller of Works and Project Director of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Road, Federal Ministry of Works; Engr. Mary Afolayan, Group General Manager, Technical, FEMADEC GROUP LTD; Mrs. Titilayo Oshodi, Special Adviser to the Lagos State Government on Climate Change; and Engr. Dr. Obuks Ejohwomu, Associate Professor in the Mechanical & Civil Engineering Department at the University of Manchester, United Kingdom.
Organisers say the discussions will move beyond theory to practical strategies for expanding renewable energy deployment and strengthening climate resilience. The panel is expected to draw perspectives from engineering, public policy, infrastructure, healthcare, climate governance, academia and the private sector.
The colloquium is named after Engr. Ademola Isaac Olorunfemi, a former NSE President (2014–2015). It forms part of a broader Engineering Week that also features a Young Engineers Forum of Nigeria (YEFON) session themed “From Ideas to Impact,” an Elders and Spouses programme on well-being, and a technical tour of Greenpeg Engineering’s industrial and renewable-energy facilities.
Muili, whose tenure as Branch Chairman ends with the Annual General Meeting, described professional leadership as a relay. She thanked past chairmen, fellows, the planning committee led by Engr. Olubowale R.R., MNSE, and all volunteers, while welcoming the NSE President as Chairman of the Occasion. She urged participants to convert knowledge into engineered outcomes — reliable energy, resilient infrastructure and technologies that can be sustained locally.
The event comes against the backdrop of growing concerns over Nigeria’s energy security and climate vulnerability, and the need to accelerate the transition to cleaner, more sustainable energy sources.
