The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) Apapa Branch on Monday opened its Engineering Week 2026 by calling for the urgent adoption of artificial intelligence in predictive policing and surveillance to tackle the country’s insecurity challenges.
Chairman Engr. Emmanuel Okechukwu Okolo, MNSE, MNIMechE, made the appeal during a press briefing that launched the four-day event themed “Leveraging Artificial Intelligence for Predictive Policing and Surveillance: A Strategic Framework for Addressing Insecurity in Nigeria.”
“As Engineers, our mandate is clear: to provide solutions that improve the quality of life and secure the future of our nation,” Okolo said. He described the theme as a call for engineers to move beyond reaction and design systems that predict, prevent and protect, citing AI-powered crime pattern analysis, smart CCTV and drone surveillance as the next frontier in national security.
Okolo noted that Nigeria loses billions in investment, productivity and lives to insecurity each year, while traditional policing remains stretched. He argued that the country holds advantages in data, talent and engineering ingenuity that can help security agencies analyse patterns, predict hotspots and deploy resources before crimes occur. Intelligent surveillance, he added, can monitor ports, highways and borders around the clock.
“This is not science fiction. This is engineering,” Okolo stated, emphasising Apapa’s position as Nigeria’s commercial and logistics gateway and its acute understanding of the cost of insecurity. The branch plans public lectures, technical sessions, panel discussions and other activities this week to develop a practical framework for government, security agencies and the private sector.
The programme runs from August 24 to 27. Day One featured the press briefing at 10 a.m. and a public lecture by Prosper A. Amuquandoh, management consultant, teaching fellow at Harvard University and president of Streamline Data LLC, USA, at noon. Subsequent days include a humanitarian visit to Bab-Es Salam Homes in Ikeja, an industrial visit to Guinness Ogba Brewery, lectures by Nigerian Army and NSCDC personnel, fitness activities, and the Annual General Meeting with election of new executives at the Federal Ministry of Works Central Workshop, Ijora.
Okolo also reviewed the branch’s achievements under the current tenure, listing four public lectures, three workshops and seminars, ten courtesy visits, five industrial visits and ten technical sessions covering topics from safety culture and corrosion engineering to facility management and project tools.
