We need a President who believes in Nigeria’s unity -Wike

 

.’Those who accuse judiciary of corruption not clean’

 

Rivers State governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has urged Nigerians to take the opportunity that the 2023 general election will offer them to elect a Nigerian who believes in the unity of the country and its people.

 

Speaking to leaders and delegates of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in  Birnin Kebbi, capital of Kebbi State  on Tuesday, Governor Wike emphasised that Nigeria is more divided now under the All Progressives Congress (APC) led Federal Government than ever.

 

Governor Wike pointed to the need why the country requires a president that will be in charge of things, including issues of security and the economy.

 

He described as sad that Nigerian farmers cannot go to farm conveniently or go about their trading activities because of insecurity.

 

“We need a Nigerian who believes in the unity of this country. We have never been divided the way we are divided now. If God gives us (PDP) the opportunity, we will form a government of national unity where everybody will be involved.”

 

Governor Wike, told the delegates that he is the best PDP aspirant that has the capacity to secure electoral victory for the party and implement policies that will truly rescue Nigeria.

 

According to him, PDP and indeed, Nigerians need somebody who can face the APC squarely in the 2023 general election and give the country a new direction in which safety of life is guaranteed.

 

“There is a war you go and you know the kind of soldiers you send and the general that will be the commander. In this kind of fight now, it is me that can fight it.

 

“What PDP is looking for is who can make us win the election. If we don’t win this election, PDP is gone. I’m tired of this opposition. I am the only aspirant who has what it takes to win this election for PDP.

 

“And when we win the presidential election in February, 2023, we will win Kebbi in March. And I am going to give you all the support that you require.”

 

The Rivers State governor reminded the delegates that first of all, there has to be a party before anybody can run election, and most of those seeking to fly the party’s presidential flag had in the past abandoned it to die. But, people like him stayed back to build the party and make it once again formidable.

 

“I was one of the people who stood firm, who made sure that this party didn’t die. There are those who fought this party in 2015 to make us lose the election. If we didn’t lose the election, will we not be in opposition now?

 

“We have worked hard and a labourer deserves his wages as it is in the holy book. I have worked for this party. So, nobody will say that I did not work for this party.”

 

Kebbi State PDP Chieftain and Chairman of Forum of former PDP Ministers, Alhaji Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN noted the enormous burden of insecurity on Nigeria that requires a courageous leader to handle.

 

“Today in Nigeria, we have problem of insecurity. We have problem with the economy. We have poverty. We have hunger. We have restlessness. We have joblessness. There is problem of lack of justice. There is a problem of lack of fairness.

 

“In short, there is leadership failure and so when we talk of 2023, we should be talking of the survival of Nigeria as one united and indissoluble nation.

 

“We need a leader that has capacity to take very decisive decisions. Wike has that capacity.  We need a leader that is capable of building the diverse and strong bridges of friendship across the divide, Wike has that capacity.

 

“We need a leader that is consummate and cosmopolitan, Wike is the person. We need a leader that is educated. Wike is educated.”

 

Also, Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike of Rivers State says those accusing judiciary in Nigeria of being corrupt, are not clean themselves.

 

He noted that while corruption in the judiciary undermines the courts’ credibility, those who often are quick to throw tantrum at judiciary, particularly legal practitioners, are culpable as well.

 

Governor Wike made this assertion on Monday night during a state banquet organised at the Government House, Port Harcourt, in honour of Hon. Justice Mary Peter Odili, on her 70th birthday and retirement from the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

 

“For me, those who are abusing judiciary of corruption, their hands are not clean. Anybody who is abusing judiciary or judges, their hands are not clean. But that does not also mean that even you in the judiciary should not keep your house in order. That is the truth.”

 

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, the governor urged State High Courts to abide by the provisions of the new Electoral Act, which prohibits them from handling pre-election or electoral matters. According to the governor, some State High Courts are already acting in contravention of the law.

 

“The truth is that the Electoral Act says anything about pre-election or electoral matters, is now to be decided by the Federal High Court.”

 

Governor Wike declared he will remain eternally grateful to Hon. Justice Mary Odili, for creating the opportunity for him to meet her husband and former governor of Rivers State, Dr. Peter Odili, when he ventured into active partisan politics in 1998.

 

The Rivers State governor reiterated that there is no politician serving at the federal or state level since 1999 that will deny the fact that they did not pass through the tutelage Dr. Odili.

 

He said despite the generosity of Dr. Odili and his family, some of those whom they had helped politically, have regrettably betrayed and humiliated them.

 

“I have never seen a man who has suffered humiliation, I have never seen a man who has suffered betrayal in life like Dr. Odili.”

 

Governor Wike further explained that Dr Odili’s insistence that someone from the Ikwerre extraction should succeed him as governor in 2007, earned him some enemies.

 

“Dr. Odili biggest problem in this state today, people must know the truth, is because he said Ikwerre man must become governor, that’s it. If any man tells you that Odili has committed any other sin, it’s a lie. It’s just because he said Ikwerre man must become governor.

 

“Unfortunately, we the Ikwerre people whom he said should be governor are ones that put him in the witness box. But I want to appeal to him, forgive, you are a Christian. You are a Christian, forgive all of us.”

 

Governor Wike, who recalled how the Odili family suffered blackmail and humiliation because of him, vowed never to grieve or engage in act that will bring them into disrepute.

 

He reaffirmed that Dr. Odili’s fatherly counsel has been one of the reasons why he has succeeded in the governance and transformation of Rivers State since 2015.

 

In his remarks on behalf of his family, former Rivers State governor, Dr. Peter Odili, said all through his wife’s career as a judicial officer, he never for once attempted to influence her in any matter.

 

Dr. Odili recalled two instances when a late traditional ruler in Port Harcourt and his extended family members from Ndoni had approached him to intervene in matters before his wife’s court, but he declined and offered to help them pay their legal fees.

 

“When I finished being governor and went to Abuja to spend time with her, and a lot of political cases as you know were rolling over each other. All my friends in Abuja know and they tell each other, the moment you have case either at the Court of Appeal when she was there or at the Supreme Court, the access you use to have to come as a personal friend cease until the case is over.”

 

Dr. Odili thanked Governor Wike and the people of Rivers State for honouring his wife after 44 years of meritorious in the judiciary.

 

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, described Justice Odili, as an epitome of dignity, hard work, fairness and excellence.

 

Represented by Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, he said Justice Odili remains an inspiration to the girl child.

 

“My lord has shown what is possible with diligence, hard work and integrity. Through you we   see that the sky is the limit.”
