The remains of Olalekan Oyeyemi Ajagungbade, popularly known as “Emir,” an aide and associate of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, have been laid to rest in Osogbo.

Daily Champion reports that Ajagungbade was reportedly shot dead by suspected hoodlums after a meeting at Mayfair Motor Park in Ile-Ife over a dispute surrounding the control and leadership of a motor park in the ancient city.

He reportedly attended the meeting as part of efforts to resolve the disagreement between rival factions laying claim to the park’s leadership.

However, tension also reportedly heightened at the Osun State University Teaching Hospital (UNIOSUNTH), where Emir’s remains had been deposited at the morgue.

Family members, friends, supporters and some of his associates were said to have besieged the hospital premises around the morgue to mourn the deceased.

Some of the grieving youths reportedly remained around the premises in anticipation that the deceased might somehow resurrect, before the situation later became unruly.

The tension reportedly began when a hospital staff member, identified as Abiodun, allegedly raised his mobile phone to record the gathering near the Administrative Block.

The staff member was reportedly attacked, while his phone was smashed and subsequently burnt by some of the youths who were protesting the killing of their leader.

The Chief Security Officer of the institution, Mr Farinloye, was also reportedly attacked when he attempted to intervene and rescue Abiodun from the mob.

A source within the hospital, who pleaded anonymity, said the police later intervened after the mob allegedly assaulted another visitor to the hospital.

The source said, “Police operatives later intervened because they also assaulted one of the visitors to the hospital.

“It was the police that rescued the two staff of UNIOSUNTH and one other. They were pelting stones at the police after they rescued their victims and were leaving the premises of the hospital.”

The youths reportedly hurriedly left the hospital premises following the confrontation with the police.

Following the incident, security was reinforced at the hospital, with police operatives deployed to both entrances.

Five police patrol vans were stationed around the premises, while a Department of State Services (DSS) van was sighted by our correspondent patrolling the hospital.

However, his remains were retrieved from the morgue and buried at his residence in Agunbelewo, Osogbo in accordance with traditional rites.

Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer of the Osun State Command, Abiodun Ojelabi, disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Zungara, has directed the transfer of the case to the state CID for comprehensive investigation.

He said, “The CP since Sunday has directed that the case be transferred to the state CID for more comprehensive investigation

“Those that have been fingered in connection with the incident, rather than going to social media to claim innocence, should go to any police station around them to say whatever they have to say.

“He has also promised that all those involved, regardless of which side they belong to will be apprehended and Justice will be done.”
