Oct 1: IPOB leader, Kanu may be released on amnesty

Indications are rife that the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu may soon regain his freedom.

According to an inside source who spoke on condition of anonymity, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is considering releasing Kanu under amnesty on October 1.

Kanu’s continued detention has continue ho attract  widespread concerns, prompting numerous stakeholders including sone members of the National Assembly to appeal to President Tinubu for a political solution to the situation.

Also, notable Igbo leaders, including the late Mbazulike Amaechi and Chukwuemeka Ezeife, had previously met with former President Muhammadu Buhari to secure Kanu’s release but failed, despite Buhari’s assurances before exiting office in 2023.

Recall that one of the key arguments for Kanu’s release is that the court hhas earlier discharged him of all treasonable offenses brought against him, allowing him to continue his trial without detention.

Also, Kanu’s legal team has maintained that their client has fulfilled the conditions for his release, describing further detention as unlawful.

President Tinubu’s potential amnesty for Kanu is seen as a gesture of goodwill and a bid to ease tensions in the Southeast mark a significant development in the quest for peace and stability. abd moreso,  placate Igbo leaders and stakeholders who have been demanding his release.

It would also pave the way for dialogue and reconciliation, potentially ending the pro-Biafra agitation
