No law prohibiting VIO operation in Plateau-Transport Commissioner

The Plateau State Commissioner of Transport, Jatau Davou Gyang, has stated that there is no existing law or Court verdict prohibiting the operations of Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) in the state.

Gyang said they will try as much as possible to cut down excesses on the operations of VIO by adopting wholistic approach especially sensitisation.

The transport commissioner made the assertion on Wednesday during an interaction with newsmen at the NUJ Secretariat Jos where he spoke on some burning issues relating to transportation system across the state.

It will be recalled that the ministry suspended VIO activities temporarily due to upheaval with some road users. The situation that led to the assault on VIO personnel.

Following the unfortunate incident, the ministry constituted a committee to unravel the rationale behind such act.

The commissioner confirmed that the committee has submitted its report which, according to him, both VIO and the public are to blame.

“VIO is an agency domesticated by law. Their duty is to check and inspect vehicles. They are not revenue generating agency. They can only imposed punitive fine on you once they realise you road unworthiness.

“People should stop dehumanising VIO officials no matter the circumstances. The 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended did not gave room for assault.

“Based on the report of the committee, there are a lot of gaps. We have already made some arrest and effort is ongoing to arrest other perpetrators and were ready to prosecute them”, Gyang assured.

He further revealed that the ministry is working out modalities to intensify the installation of surveillance cameras within the parameters of Jos and Bukuru metropolis to ascertain and curb the incidences of car thief.

He also tasked vehicle operators to always enhance road worthiness by their particulars are up to date.
