In commemoration of the 2026 International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR), the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Lagos State Branch, held an awareness walk on flood and other disasters preparedness.

About 120 volunteers and members of the Red Cross Society participated in the sensitisation programme on Tuesday, at Makoko Community, Yaba.

The outreach aimed to improve residents’ understanding of disaster risks and encourage households to take proactive steps to protect lives, livelihoods and property.

With the global theme: ‘Resilience Starts at Home,’ residents were sensitised on disaster prevention, early preparedness, community participation and practical actions to reduce the risks associated with flooding and other disasters.

Speaking on the significance of the exercise, the Branch Vice-Chairman, Mr Segun Akande emphasised the need to make disaster preparedness a shared responsibility, beginning with individuals and families at the household level and extending to the wider community.

Akande highlighted the importance of public awareness in reducing disaster risks, particularly in communities vulnerable to flooding.

“By engaging residents directly and providing accessible educational materials, the Nigerian Red Cross seeks to encourage preventive behaviour and strengthen local capacity to anticipate, prepare for and respond to emergencies.

“The initiative reflects the humanitarian organisation’s continued commitment to disaster risk reduction, community engagement and the protection of vulnerable populations across Lagos State.

“Through the campaign in Makoko, the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Lagos State Branch, reaffirmed the message that effective disaster management begins long before an emergency occurs. As the global theme reminds us, resilience starts at home,” he said.

The Branch Secretary, Mr Olakunle Lasisi; the Disaster Management Officer, Mr Ige Oladimeji; and other branch leaders were present to ensure a successful sensitisation programme.

The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction is observed annually on October 13 to create awareness on the importance of reducing disaster risks and building safer, more resilient communities.
