Lagos Assembly to reverse titles, commerce to safeguard indigenes- Obasa

The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Rt Hon Mudashiru Obasa on Tuesday hinted  that the state would pass laws to safeguard Yoruba indigenes in the State.

Obasa stated this in his acceptance speech after he was unanimously elected as the Speaker of the Assembly, noting that as part of the 10th Assembly legislative agenda, laws and resolutions would be put in place to protect the interest of the indigenes in the State.

The election of Obasa symbolized a three consecutive terms to lead the State Assembly. He was elected as Speaker in 2015 and re-elected in 2019 and now in 2023.

Also elected unanimously was the Deputy Speaker, Hon Mojisola Lasbat Meranda from Apapa Constituency I. While Noheem Adams from Eti-Osa Constituency I clinched the Majority Leader seat.

Hon Adedamola Kasunmu from Ikeja Constituency II elected as the Deputy Majority, The Chief Whip was won by Hon Mojeed Fatai from Ibeju-Lekki I and the Deputy Chief Whip went to Hon Setonji David from Badagry Constituency II.

Hon Temitope Adewale representing Ifako-Ijaiye Constituency I nominated Obasa which was seconded by Hon Sylvester Ogunkelu Epe Constituency II.

Hon Desmond Elliot Surulere I nominated Lasbat as the Deputy Speaker which was seconded by Hon Tijani Suraju from Ojo Constituency II.

The Speaker said the 10th Assembly’s legislative agenda would include laws and resolutions in the areas of economy and commerce, property and titles, and reversal of “all that are reversible to protect the interest of the indigenes.”

Obasa, who was elected Speaker of the House for a third consecutive term, hinted at some of the controversies in the build-up to the 2023 elections, including the argument that non-indigenes wanted to take over the state, declared that Lagos is a Yorùbá land.

He said: “Lagos is Yorùbá land as against the assertions of some people that it is a no man’s land. Therefore, part of our legislative agenda is to ensure the translation of laws passed by this House to the Yorùbá language.

“We also aim at achieving our collective goals of creating a robust legislative framework that protects the interest of our people. Going forward in this wise, we are going to employ all legislative instruments for the support of the indigenes of Lagos.

“There would be laws and resolutions in the areas of economy and commerce, property and titles and we will reverse all that are reversible to protect the interest of the indigenes,”
