A Catholic church owned Civil Society Organization, Justice Development and Peace Caritas, JDPC, said the recently concluded gubernatorial election in Anambra State was transparent, peaceful, free, fair and credible.
In a press statement made available to newsmen by its Exective Director, Rev. Fr. Dr. Edwin Udoye, he explained that, “the 2021 Anambra State Governorship election was held on 6, November, 2021 across the state with exemption of Ihiala LGA which he said was conducted on 9, November due to logistics and security challenges”
He disclosed further that JDPC Onitsha conducted series of activities in readiness to the election which he said included voter education, security capacity training and enhancement, engagement with key stakeholders and civil Society Organizations (CSOs), training and deployment of election observers as well as deployed 550 carefully trained stationary observers to the polling units across the 21 local Government Areas of the State.
The cleric stated that the trained observers were deployed to observe the election Day process from the arrival of the election of officials, set-up of polling units to the closure of the polling units and provided every day situational reports, information and data on the commencement of polls, availablity of election materials and critical incidents that impacted the quality of the election.
He revealed further that the election recorded enthusiastic and early arrival of some voters in many places not withstanding the palpable security challenges.
The Catholic Priest also noted that the poor handling of Bimodal verification Accreditation System (BVAS) by many ad hoc staff showed they were ill trained and lacked requisite knowledge in its operation as it could not swiftly authenticate finger prints and detect faces.
He listed voters turn out, vote buying, citizens activism, security agents, violence reports and supplement election as other observations reported by election day observers.
