Insecurity: Reps Minority Caucus backs Buhari’s  impeachment

Minority Caucus of the House of Representatives has thrown its weight behind the ultimatum handed down President Muhammadu Buhari by the Senate Minority Caucus asking him to address the raging insecurity in Nigeria, or face impeachment.

Led by Senator Philip Aduda, the Senate caucus had on Wednesday July 27, issued a six week ultimatum to Buhari after staging a walkout of the chamber during plenary, in protest against refusal of the Senate President to allow an open debate on the insecurity.

After separate closed door meetings of the Minority caucuses of the two chambers at the National Assembly on Thursday, Minority Leader of the House of Representatives, Hon. Ndudi Elumelu told journalists that they are with their Senate counterparts.

Elumelu lamented that the current security situation has suggested that Nigeria is no longer on the right footing it was set by her founding fathers, adding that Abuja, which is even the seat of power is no longer safe.

He said it was a confirmation that the capital city was not safe as a cabinet minister in the ruling APC government has directed schools in the city to be closed. “As it is now, you cannot even travel by air, because there is no aviation fuel”, he said.

The lawmaker assured that the House minority caucus under his leadership is in support of the Senate.

“We support our colleagues walking out, and we’re looking at doing so. After six to eight weeks, if nothing change, we will gather all the signatures, and I am making it clear that it is not about the minority…our colleagues (in APC) are also affected but they cannot speak out, so we’re speaking for them”, he noted.
