IGP hands over catches of arms , ammunitions to the National Centre for the control of small arms , light weapons

The Police authorities on Thursday at a colourful ceremony handed over catches of arms and ammunitions to the National Centre for the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons NCCSALW to ensure a crime free atmosphere for the smooth conduct of the 2023 general elections in Nigeria.

The Inspector-General of Police IGP Usman Alkali Baba represented by the Deputy-Inspector General of Police DIG in charge of Finance and Administration DIG Dan Mallam handed over the ammunitions to the NCCSALW in the office of the National Security Adviser ONSA.

He said that the proliferation of small arms and light weapons poses a threat to national security and lamented that violent extremism, secessionist agitations, banditary, kidnapping and other crimes are challenges caused by it.

He further said that the Nigeria Police Force NPF ‘ll continue to mop up small arms and light weapons in circulation in the hands of criminals and other outlawed groups in the country.

He listed some of the items recovered by the security agents and to be handed over to the NCCSALW as 265 automatic rifles, 1909 local pistols, 98 locally made double barrel guns, 7 rocket propelled grenades and 1057 assorted cartilages amongst others.

The Force Public Relations Officer FPRO Olumuyiwa Adejobi a Chief Superintendent of Police said that the handing over of the arms and ammunition recovered by the Police to the Office of the National Security Adviser ONSA ‘ll signal to those that are working against public safety that that their game is over in Nigeria.

In his remarks, the Director of the NCCSALW Maj-Gen Abbas Mohammed Dikko (rtd) said that the Centre is working closely with all the security agencies in the country to mop up arms and ammunition in the hands of criminals.

He told the audience that the first collection of arms and ammunition done by the NCCSALW was in Bauchi State and was coordinated by Commissioner of Police in the State.

He also thanked the Inspector-General of Police IGP Usman Alkali Baba for his magnanimity, professionalism and doggedness in the fight against crimes and commended him for the process leading to the recovery and handing over of the arms and ammunitions to the Centre.
