Gridlock as youths protesting death of 4 students in auto crash block Abeokuta-Sagamu highway

MICHAEL-AZEEZ OGUNSIJI, Abeokuta

Chaos erupted along the busy Abeokuta-Sagamu Expressway earlier today as enraged youths and residents of Siun community in Obafemi Owode Local Government Area blocked both sides of the road following a fatal accident that claimed the lives of four secondary school students.

According to eyewitnesses, a speeding car lost control and rammed into a group of students crossing the highway this afternoon.

The impact killed four students instantly, sparking immediate outrage in the community.

Angry youths and residents swiftly mobilised, barricading the expressway with burning tyres, logs, and stones, demanding justice and better road safety measures.

The protest has completely halted vehicular movement, leaving hundreds of commuters stranded.

Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Ogun State Police Command have been deployed to the scene to restore order. However, protesters insist they will not clear the road until government officials address their grievances.

A community leader, who spoke anonymously, accused the government of neglecting the highway despite repeated fatal accidents. “Our children are dying because of reckless drivers and bad roads. Enough is enough!” he said.

Motorists are advised to seek alternative routes as the gridlock may persist for hours.
