An engineer and Founder of Brain & Spine Foundation Africa, Engr. Chika Okwuolisa has marked this year’s World Spine Day with a personal commitment to spine health by undergoing a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan.

Speaking to mark World Spine Day 2026, commemorated globally on October 16, the Founder said the decision was a practical step to practise what she has long advocated.

She noted that as someone who has spent years advocating for brain and spinal health, raising awareness and encouraging people to seek timely medical attention, advocacy must also begin with advocates themselves.

“Sometimes, we spend so much time caring for others that we forget to care for ourselves.

We encourage people to go for medical check-ups, but how often do we take our own advice?” She asked.

She stressed that the spine supports almost every human activity, yet it is often taken for granted until pain, injury or disability occurs.

This year’s theme, “Spine Health for Life at Every Stage,” she said, is a reminder that spine health should not be ignored until pain sets in.

She urged Nigerians to adopt preventive measures including practising good posture, staying physically active, lifting objects correctly, maintaining a healthy weight and seeking professional medical advice when experiencing persistent back or neck pain.

According to her, getting an MRI is not something everyone needs routinely, as medical imaging should be guided by a qualified healthcare professional, but knowing when to seek medical attention and taking preventive measures can make a significant difference.

She reiterated that Brain & Spine Foundation Africa believes awareness, prevention, early intervention, access to treatment and rehabilitation must become priorities in homes, workplaces, communities and healthcare systems.

“My spine health matters. Your spine health matters. Every spine matters.

This World Spine Day, let us move better, live fuller, and build a future where spinal health receives the attention it deserves,” she added.
