Scientific experts have warned of the dangers to food production, safety and ecosystem of Genetically Modified Organisms GMOs saying that it would erode the nation’s sovereignty in food production and also lead to spontaneous abortion and infertility in humans.
The Executive Director Center for Food Safety, Prof.Chris Oristurberg Amua, has said that Nigeria is not yet in charge of food production and distribution system due to the prevalence of GMOs in our food value chain and food products
He said that Nigeria seems to be at a crossroad as regards food safety and the nation appears to be walking into a trap set for it by some vested interests by not banning lor passing legislations on the use of GMOs.
According to him Genetically Modified Organisms GMOs are a trojan horse against food sovereignty and and they have the capacity to destroy the food production chain, economy and ecosystem.
He called on policy makers to urgently review the regulatory and legislative framework on GMOs usage in good products in the country, adding that any seed planted with it in a year cannot regenerate or be replanted.
He pointed out that in many countries of the world, there are legislations that prohibit the importation or cultivation of GMO products and the report of improved food production by some of the promoters and institutions is a myth.
Also speaking in the same vein, the Deputy Director of the Research Centre Dr Segun Adebayo, warned that all GMO contraceptives in maize and other staple food renders the male reproductive semen inactive.
He said that all these are itenarant products that have the potential as a weapon of bioterrorism and are very dangerous to human health.
These experts expressed concerns that Nigeria is among the countries that have not banned the importation or cultivation of GMOs despite the global outcry against the use of these items as weapons of western nations to diminish and recolonize African and Caribbean nations.
