In a heartwarming display of solidarity and empowerment, the Forum of Women Professors, University of Uyo, recently visited Immaculate Conception Secondary School, Itak, Ikono Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, to celebrate the 2025 International Day of the Girl Child. The event was a resounding success, leaving an indelible mark on the young minds of the students.

The delegation, led by the founder of the forum, Prof. Comfort Memfin Ekpo, the first female Vice Chancellor of the University of Uyo, donated a treasure trove of learning materials, mainly textbooks, to the school. This generous gesture is expected to go a long way in enhancing the learning experience of the students and inspiring them to reach their full potential.

In her address, Prof. Ekpo urged the girls to be diligent, purpose-driven, and focused on their studies, emphasizing that education is the key to unlocking their dreams. She encouraged them to break glass ceilings and compete globally, citing examples of trailblazing women who have made a mark in various fields.

Prof. Etok, a renowned food and industrial microbiology expert, reaffirmed the forum’s commitment to uplifting the girl child, saying, “We are here to celebrate girls and create a world where every girl feels safe, heard, valued, and empowered to thrive.” Her words resonated deeply with the students, who listened with rapt attention.

The event featured a powerful lecture by Prof. Imoh Emenyi on “The Girl I am, The Change I Lead” and “Purpose-Driven Girl,” which inspired the girls to become leaders and agents of change. The Dean of Law, Prof. Mojisola Eseyin, also spoke on “Girls’ Rights and Protection Laws,” educating the girls on their rights and how to protect themselves.

The event was filled with excitement and joy, as the girls participated in tree planting and other activities. The presence of dignitaries, including Rev. Mfon Lawrence, wife of APC chairman, Mrs. Ini Stephen Ntokekpo, and Miss Isokobo, the most beautiful girl in Akwa Ibom State for 2025, added to the excitement!

The Forum of Women Professors also shared plans for an International Conference for Women Professors, a compendium of female professors, and a newsletter to disseminate information on their activities. These initiatives aim to promote women’s empowerment and provide a platform for women to share their experiences and expertise.

The event was a resounding success, thanks to the tireless efforts of the Forum of Women Professors and the support of the school administration. As one student remarked, “This event has inspired me to dream big and work hard to achieve my goals. I am grateful to the Forum of Women Professors for believing in me and empowering me to succeed!”
