The Conference of United Political Parties (CUPP) has described the banishment of former emir of Kano State, Mallam Mohammad Sanusi II as barbaric, illegal and unconstitutional.
CUPP said Sanusi was not given fair hearing, arguing that no governor or president has right to banish a Nigerian citizen or forcefully move him to any location in violation of right of movement, except by an order of court.
Spokesperson of the coalition, Ikenga Ugochinyere, at a press conference on Tuesday in Abuja, said the Court of Appeal in the case of Kebbi State government vs. HRH Mustapha Jokolo (2013) declared the banishment and deportation of a deposed Jokolo as unconstitutional.
He added that the court said the banishment and deportation of the emir by the Kebbi State government to Obi in Nasarawa State “has been unduly and wrongfully denied his constitutional rights to respect for the dignity of his person; to assemble freely and associate with other persons – including the people of Gwandu Emirate of Kebbi State; and to move freely throughout Nigeria and to reside in any part thereof as respectively provided in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999.”
CUPP reminded the Kano State government that Nigeria is still a constitutional democracy, and warned that “This operation destroy anybody or any institution either traditional, parliamentary and judicial that stands up to against the desires of a few incompetent people to hang on to power must be halted.”
The coalition, therefore, urged the deposed emir to seek redress in court and pledged the sum of N3 million “as independent contribution to his legal team.”
CUPP said it would challenge the banishment in court, describing it as barbaric and a plot to enslave and hunt perceived enemies of the All Progressives Congress (APC) led Federal Government.
