Covid 19: Akwa Ibom Transport Commissioner donates relief materials to constituents

Relief materials worth millions of Naira have been donated to the people of remote villages of Eyulor Oro in Urue offong/ Oruko local government by Commissioner, Ministry of transport, Akwa Ibom State, Chief Hon. Unoh Etim Unoh to cushion effect of total lockdown order over Covid 19 on the people.

Flagging off the donation, the commissioner himself empathized with the people over the hardship they are experiencing due to the stay at home order as a result of the global pandemic called coronavirus or Covid 19.

The commissioner who is also the chairman of Urue offong/ Oruko local government Covid 19 relief materials distribution committee said what he donated was directly from his pocket.

“Please my people you may have to manage what you see, even though it is very little because that is what I can afford for now from my pocket”, he pleaded.

From his body language it was like he was trying to avoid making a statement on when the local government relief materials distribution committee will begin sharing of the relief materials.

Our correspondent gathered that some of the recipients of the largese got as little as Five hundred Naira but they were thankful to the donor.

Because according to them, “it’s not the amount donated that matters but the love behind the donation”.

Responding to the gesture on behalf of the recipients, a retired primary school headmistress, Mrs Okpoyo said “we thank the Commissioner very much for remembering us at this period of hardship. Covid 19 affects everybody both rich and poor people, for him to come to share the little he has with us in this hard time means he is a born leader”.

However, Mrs Okpoyo pleaded with him to extend the same hand of fellowship to the people of the surrounding villages, according to her “if you eat and your neighbor doen’t the pain s/he will pass through from hunger will affect you directly or indirectly”, she said.

Our correspondent reports that two weeks after the inauguration of the local government relief packages committees they are yet to act. Against this backdrop, there’s an outcry across the state that the committees should spring into action immediately to avert people dying from hunger.
