Many folks do not know that a whole lot of difference exists between the office of the prophet and the simple gift of prophecy. Every believer can prophesy within the realms of comfort, edification and exhortation but not all believers are prophets or sitting in the office of the prophet.
The office of the prophet is like a flowing ocean while the gift of prophecy is like a bucket of water from the ocean.
I am going to show you the basic differences between the office of a prophet and the gift of prophecy.
OFFICE OF THE PROPHET
1. The office of a prophet is a life calling, either from birth or after being born again
2. It is not asked for or prayed for
3. It is one of the five ministerial/governmental offices in the church
4. The message from the prophet is deep with revelational, correctional and directional content
5. The office of the prophet is like an ocean of revelation
6. The office of the prophet equips the saints to do the work of the ministry.
7. The grace the prophet carries, helps people to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit
8. To be a prophet is a calling and this gives you an identity
GIFT OF PROPHECY
1. The gift of prophecy is a gift given by God. You don’t earn it, it is received
2. It is received by asking
3. It is one of the nine gifts of the Holy Spirit
4. The gift of prophecy is only for edification (to build), exhortation (to call near), and comfort (to cheer up)
5. The gift of prophecy is like a bucket of water from the ocean of revelation
6. The gift of prophecy brings out the best in believers
7. Anyone who is saved and has received the baptism of the Holy Spirit can prophesy when moved by the Holy Spirit-1 Cor. 14:31, Acts 2: 17-18.
8. To minister in prophecy is a gift and this gives you ability. 1 Peter 4:10
It is pertinent to point out that when a person ministers in the gift of prophecy, the gift is the ability to prophesy. The words themselves are the gift.
However, when a person is a prophet, they themselves are the gift. Ephesians 4 says that Christ gave gifts unto men. The gifts that Christ gave to men are “other men”. A prophet is a gift to the church.
