PENGASSAN gets new president, pledges to build on Osifo’s foundation

The newly elected president of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), Comrade Bosun Olabiyi-Agoro, has vowed to build on the legacies of his predicessor, Festus Osifo, whose tenure has come to an end, stating that the immediate past leader layed a solid foundation and stabilised the association during his time in office.

Alabiyi-Agiro who stated this in his acceptance speech when he emerged the President of PENGASSAN at the 1st Quadraenniel National Delegate Conference of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria in Abuja Saturday, described Osifo as leader, builder, and fighter, saying, under his tenure, PENGASSAN became stronger, more respected, and more feared by those he said seek to exploit the members.

Commending Osifo, the new PENGASSAN president said: “You defended jobs during divestments, you fought for unprecedented CBA and its implementation, and you gave PENGASSAN a voice at the highest tables in government.Comrade, on behalf of over 30,000 PENGASSAN members, I say Thank You. Your legacy is our foundation, and we will carefully and consciously build upon it to the benefit of our member, Nigerian workers and the country at large.

“While people were giving tribute to Comrade Osifo and reeling out his legacies, I was convinced without doubt that I am the first legacy of Festus Osifo and arguably his best legacy as far as I am concerned. He refused to take the easy option when I was down and almost out. He was ready to stake everything we are referring to as his legacies today for me, for my job.

“To the NEC, the CWC, the Branch Executives, and every delegate here — thank you for the trust. I do not take it lightly. I know the weight of this office. It is the weight of a single father in Warri waiting for his salary. It is the weight of an engineer in Port Harcourt fighting for fairness and equity. It is the weight of a young graduate in Lagos looking for job security in this energy transition period and unimaginable uncertainties. It is the weight of a lady worker who is struggling with unfair treatment and workplace harassment.Comrades, we accept this responsibility knowing fully well that we have your support. More than we supported.

“Comrade Festus Osifo, I and the team will need your support. With your support, we will be strengthened. And I have an edge over Comrade Osifo because I have a Comrade Festus Osifo who has walked the path I am beginning to walk for the past 6 years, a resource that this new set of leaders will maximise to the fullest. To the newly elected leaders that we will be working together in the next phase of this association, let us consider this as a privilege and focus on the duty at hand, let us seize the opportunity to sincerely serve and lead with the fear of God and commitment.

“Let us work together and be in one accord, speaking with one voice so that our members will reap the maximum benefit while we hold these offices in trust. Our Commitment to You and this association will be around 5 cardinal points while we will not neglect others as deemed necessary”.

The new PENGASSAN president listed his administration’s 5 cardinal points to include, protection of jobs and membership drive, defend the CBA and strengthening industrial relations, training, women empowerment, staff welfare and stakeholder management, build a stronger, united PENGASSAN
