The Oduduwa Integrity Association has released a statement ahead of the upcoming June 12 commemorations, calling on Nigerians, especially those from Yorubaland, to clarify the purpose of any planned protests.
The association emphasized that the sacrifices of the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola should not be overshadowed by activities that might undermine the democratic ideals he fought for.
“Can the protesters in Nigeria, especially from Yorubaland, tell us what exactly they are protesting against?” the statement read. “Have we forgotten that Chief M.K.O. Abiola sacrificed his life to bring back democracy to Nigeria? He paved the way for Olusegun Obasanjo to become president and opened doors for other leaders, including Goodluck Jonathan and others from the North, to assume office under democratic rule.”
The association expressed concern that some individuals might be using the June 12 platform to seek personal recognition rather than to honor Nigeria’s democratic journey.
“Some people call themselves radicals and activists, but it seems they are simply seeking to be seen and heard,” the statement continued. “What exactly are they protesting for?”
The group urged Nigerians to approach June 12 with solemn reflection and unity, rather than protest. “We must stay at home on June 12 and continue to ask for forgiveness for our sins and inequities as a nation,” the statement urged. “Chief Abiola’s death should remind us that God is displeased with Nigeria for his killing.”
The association concluded by stating: “Any Yoruba person planning a protest is not a true son or daughter of Yorubaland. With our son currently administering Nigeria, we should be praying for Nigeria and supporting the government, not undermining the efforts of those who fought for democracy. Let us ensure Abiola’s sacrifice is not in vain.”
The President of Oduduwa Integrity Association, Hon Omotoso Banji reiterated that the leaders of Yorubas and the rest of the world should join UNITY PRAYERS for Tinubu administration instead of protesting.
