Following the attack on the convoy of Osun State governor, Ademola Adeleke on Wednesdays, an international election observer sustained injuries, a source at the scene told our correspondent.
Hon. Jim Okolo, the Nigerian Coordinator of the foreign election observer mission, Nouvelle Perspective, was among those in the governor’s entourage who had witness the issuance of certificate of return by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Oshogbi.
According to the source, the governor has just left the INEC headquarters where the certificate was issued following his re-election recently for a second term in office and visited the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Oyetunji.
The governor arrived at the monarch’s palace at about 3:15 p.m. in a motorcade of approximately 20 vehicles. The source told our correspondent that Adeleke and members of his entourage were received by Oba Oyetunji.
However, shortly after the governor’s convoy left the palace, the suspected hoodlums reportedly launched an attack, leading to an exchange of gunfire with security operatives.
It was in the course of running for his life that Hon. Okolo fell and sustained injuries in his leg. He has since been rushed to the hospital for medical attention.
The media director of Nouvelle Perspective, Mr Alex Nwankwo told reporters that Hon. Okolo is in a stable condition, condemning what he called “senseless behaviour” of the attackers.
Adeleke of the Accord Party was on Sunday declared winner of the governorship election, defeating the APC candidate, Bola Oyebamiji in a keenly contested exercise.
Hon. Okolo and his team took part in observing the election and also participating in post-election activities to ensure smooth transition.
