The Bayelsa State government has reiterated its commitment to strengthening primary healthcare delivery through training, capacity development and strategic interventions aimed at improving the quality of healthcare services across the state.
Commissioner for health, Prof. Seiyefa Brisibe, stated that initiatives designed to strengthen the healthcare system were crucial to improving service delivery, particularly at the primary healthcare level, where residents in rural and underserved communities depend largely on accessible and affordable medical services.
“Brisibe noted that the importance of such interventions could not be overemphasised, as they promote professionalism, excellence, commitment and improved service delivery among healthcare personnel.”
“He observed that although the federal government state governments and international development partners frequently introduced programmes to strengthen healthcare systems, the effective implementation of such initiatives timely release of funds and achievement of expected outcomes remained significant challenges.”
According to him, the successful implementation of healthcare interventions requires sustained government commitment, adequate funding, effective coordination and continuous monitoring to ensure that the benefits reach the intended beneficiaries, today we are pleased to witness an intervention that demonstrates the commitment of the state government to strengthening primary healthcare delivery through training and capacity development across the state.”
The commissioner described the initiative by UNICEF is commendable, noting that it would provide healthcare personnel with opportunities to improve their knowledge and professional skills while strengthening their capacity to deliver quality services.”
He added that equipping healthcare workers with the necessary skills and resources was essential to ensuring that primary healthcare facilities could respond more effectively to the medical needs of their host communities,Brisibe emphasised that strengthening primary healthcare remained fundamental to improving access to essential health services, particularly for women, children, vulnerable populations and residents of remote communities.
He maintained that sustained investment in the primary healthcare system would contribute to better health outcomes, reduce preventable illnesses and improve public confidence in government-owned health facilities.
Also speaking, Dr Williams Appah stressed the importance of effective training, adequate logistics, appropriate screening procedures and measurable outcomes in building a stronger and more responsive healthcare system.
“Appah explained that these elements must work together to ensure that healthcare interventions translated into tangible improvements in service delivery rather than remaining policy commitments without measurable benefits.”
He said proper coordination of training programmes, logistics and screening procedures would help improve the quality of care, expand access to essential health services and make healthcare more accessible to residents across the state.”
Appah commended the Bayelsa state government for its efforts to strengthen the healthcare system and urged relevant stakeholders to sustain their commitment to improving primary healthcare delivery.
He further emphasised the need for continuous assessment of healthcare programmes to determine their effectiveness, identify gaps and ensure that resources were directed towards areas where they would have the greatest impact.
Earlier, Dr Makio Perekeme, while handing over the vehicle to the state commissioner for health, expressed appreciation for the recognition received for their efforts and reaffirmed his commitment to achieving greater results.
“Perekeme described the recognition as an honour that reflected the progress made so far and served as an encouragement to intensify efforts towards achieving more significant accomplishments.”
“We have achieved a great deal and this award is one of the recognitions of our efforts,it is an honorary award that reflects our achievements and encourages us to do even more,he acknowledged that the journey towards achieving sustainable progress often came with challenges but maintained that such difficulties should not weaken the determination of those committed to improving the healthcare system.
“As I said earlier, we have made progress and I believe we must continue to move forward, even when we face challenges, we must remain determined because we cannot afford to give up on this fight,Perekeme expressed optimism about the future, noting that sustained commitment, collaboration and support from relevant stakeholders would create further opportunities for progress.”
“He also thanked the commissioner for his support, encouragement and recognition, describing the collaboration as an important part of the achievements recorded so far. I sincerely appreciate you sir, for your support, encouragement and recognition ,thank you for being part of this journey and for contributing to our achievements,” he said.
The initiative underscores the importance of sustained investment in healthcare personnel, essential equipment and institutional capacity as part of broader efforts to strengthen primary healthcare delivery and improve the wellbeing of residents across Bayelsa State.
