The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barr. Nyesom Wike has welcomed the opportunity to host the 2nd Africa Military Games in Abuja, Nigeria, this November.

The event, expected to draw over 40 countries, aims to showcase Nigeria’s safety, economic growth, and Abuja’s hospitality. It also aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

During a courtesy visit from the Chief of Defense Staff, Gen. Christopher Gwabin Musa, Wike emphasized the importance of demonstrating Nigeria’s security and stability to the world.

According to the Minister, “this is a welcome development. One, the economic activities, two, it will also show that Nigeria is safe, Abuja is safe, come and see a city. Sometimes, like you said, people have impressions from outside without even having first-hand information. So I believe that when they come here, they will go back home with a different narrative”.

Wike assured the Chief of Defense Staff of full support and cooperation from the Federal Capital Territory Administration, ensuring a successful and hitch-free event. A press conference is scheduled for tomorrow to announce the commencement of preparations.

“On our own part, we have no choice but to give you the necessary support because it is our city that is going to host this international game. So we want to assure you we will fully participate and give you all the necessary support so that it will be a successful event.

Whatever you think we can do, do not hesitate to tell us quickly.

You know, yes, you know, bureaucracy, but when we start on time, we’ll be able to achieve what we want to achieve. So I think that it is important probably to have three people attached to you so you can work out the logistics, what you want us to do” he said.

“What is the actual assistance that you want us to do? So the chief of staff, the SSA administration, and the director of security, three of you.

The CDS will tell all those that will be able to work with you. And we want within one week, we will have gotten what we should do so that we do our own part”.

Earlier, Gen. Musa praised Wike’s efforts in revitalizing the Federal Capital Territory, noting significant improvements in security and infrastructure. “Abuja is one of the safest places to live,” he said.

“Putting back life into FCT within a very short period of one year, because things have really turned around for good at the FCT. I want to commend you.

“We are not surprised because we know doing work is what you like doing, constructions and putting things in place. So we appreciate you sir and just to also inform you that the Armed Forces is here to support you in whatever way it can, for us to ensure that FCT continues to grow without any threat within or outside of the FCT”.

“We have watched other countries how non-state actors have tried to make the federal capital, especially if you remember recently in Mali how they were able to storm the airports in order to destroy a number of things.

“But I want to assure you that we’re here, we’re fully with you in every aspect to support you to ensure that you succeed and we’re very happy with all that you have been doing for the FCT, for the country at large. We commend you, sir. So basically we’re here for one thing”.

With Nigeria hosting this grand event for the first time, expectations are high for an international-standard showcase. The games will take place from November 5th to 18th, 2024, at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja.
