2027: Ebonyi PDP candidate pledges wealth creation, women empowerment

Jacob Ogodo, Abakaliki

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senatorial candidate for Ebonyi South in the 2027 general election, Hon. Maria Ude Nwachi, has pledged to build sustainable general wealth creation, industrialization and socio -economic transformation if elected to the Senate.

Nwachi, who said her ambition was to help more people become financially independent and influential, criticised politicians who, according to her, failed to create opportunities for others to prosper while in public office.

Speaking during an interview, the senatorial hopeful said she would use her position to facilitate opportunities that would improve the economic fortunes of individuals and communities, stressing that political representation should translate into tangible benefits for the people.

“One of the things I detest about most politicians is that they don’t make other people grow. They don’t give an enabling environment for people to grow, really grow,” she said.

She explained that wealth creation should go beyond helping the less privileged to include supporting established business people to expand their investments and increase their economic influence.

“Even our big men need help. Let’s assume one of our big men has one billion naira. Through somebody in Abuja, through a representative in Abuja, they can go from one billion to five billion.”

Nwachi maintained that political representatives should help their constituents unlock greater economic opportunities.

According to her, she would facilitate opportunities for more people to become wealthy, insisting that the prosperity of individuals would ultimately benefit the wider society.

“If a lot of people become richer, become wealthier, they would be off me; they’ll be self-reliant,” she said, expressing the view that empowering more people would reduce excessive dependence on elected representatives.

The candidate, who said she was reconnecting with her constituents after seven years away, disclosed that she had been visiting communities to renew her relationship with the people ahead of the election.

She announced plans to inaugurate her campaign council in Afikpo ahead of her official campaign flag-off scheduled for October 31.

Acknowledging the financial demands of the senatorial race, she said supporters had contributed millions of naira towards her political activities.

“Luckily for me, I have some good people that believe a lot in me who have been bringing money, not just small money, many times ten million, twenty million, thirty million, fifty million,” she said, adding that the financial demands of contesting a Senate seat were considerable.

Nwachi expressed confidence that financial constraints would not derail her ambition, attributing her optimism to her faith in God and the support of influential individuals who believe in her candidacy.

She cited her political experience, including her claim that she won an election in 2015 without being given a party ticket, as evidence of her resilience.

She also recalled using her personal resources to execute community projects, including road grading, during her time in the Ebonyi State House of Assembly.

On political representation, she called for fairness in the distribution of opportunities in Ebonyi South, arguing that the senatorial contest should provide an opportunity for broader inclusion.

Nwachi also pledged to empower women through access to resources for establishing and expanding businesses, improving their incomes and supporting their families.

“I will make sure I provide resources for them to open businesses and be doing well, be taking care of their kids, taking care of themselves,” she said.

She proposed organising trips for women to source goods for their businesses, alongside social activities to encourage participation and interaction, adding that economic empowerment would help women become more self-reliant.

The PDP candidate maintained that although her primary responsibility would be to the people of Ebonyi South, her commitment to improving lives would extend beyond the district, regardless of people’s backgrounds.

“I don’t care where you come from. I’m a people person. I want people to be happy. I want people to feel good,” she said.

Nwachi expressed confidence that her longstanding relationship with her constituents, record of community support and backing from well-wishers would strengthen her chances in the 2027 election.
