FAVOUR ISHEMBER, Abuja
In a significant move to enhance emergency medical services, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Nyesom Wike, has officially launched 12 cutting-edge ambulances for FCT hospitals.
The ceremony, held at the FCT Administration Secretariat on January 29, 2026, highlights the administration’s commitment to saving lives and strengthening the capital’s healthcare infrastructure.
The newly introduced ambulances, equipped with advanced medical technology, are poised to transform emergency response across the FCT.
Wike emphasized that the ambulances are part of a broader health strategy, which includes investments in road infrastructure to ensure swift and efficient emergency care.
Wike said: “Let me first congratulate the Mandate Secretary and staff of the Health and Environmental Secretariat for driving this to fruition.
“This is not just about ambulances -it’s about ensuring that when emergencies strike, our people get the swift, efficient care they deserve.”

Wike noted that improved roads have significantly reduced travel times, citing the Abaji-Pai route, which now takes 30 minutes compared to the previous 90 minutes.
He also addressed systemic challenges, including the clearance of longstanding debts owed to health workers, stating that FCT is the only sub-national to have fully settled hazard allowances, wage awards, and medical residency training funds.
The Minister urged workers to engage in dialogue rather than confrontation, warning that sabotage of government efforts would be met with political response.
He highlighted historic reforms, including the establishment of FCT’s first Civil Service Commission and the elevation of nursing education.
“If you present five demands and the government agrees to three, why reject progress?
When grievances turn political, we respond politically,” he warned, referencing ongoing legal disputes.
On her part, Mandate Secretary for Health and Environment Secretariat, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, expressed gratitude for the administration’s efforts, stating that the interventions are deliberate and aimed at strengthening health systems.
“This Administration understands that health systems thrive on infrastructure, human resources, and equity. From ambulance deployment to road upgrades and worker welfare, every intervention is deliberate.”
The launch of the ambulances is part of the FCT Administration’s efforts to improve healthcare services, including the upgrade of the FCT School of Nursing to a College.
