FAVOUR ISHEMBER, Abuja
Federal Capital Territory Minister, Barrister Nyesom Wike, has urged residents to take ownership of public infrastructure, particularly in newly developed areas, to ensure their longevity.
Speaking During an extensive inspection of key road projects in Gwagwalada, Kwali, and surrounding communities, Wike emphasized that while the government has provided roads, streetlights, and other facilities, their sustainability depends on the people’s commitment to protecting them.
Wike stressed that security agencies can only do so much, and residents must support them with information and community vigilance to prevent vandalism and other forms of destruction.
“Government has played its part. We are providing roads, streetlights, and other facilities to make life easier. But these things can only last if the people see them as their own,” the Minister said
The Minister dismissed the idea of prioritizing any single project among the 19 lined up for commissioning, insisting that all have a direct impact on people’s lives. “Whether it’s a feeder road or a major highway, what matters is how it improves the lives of the people,” Wike said.
“For me, there is no project more important than another. Whether it’s a feeder road or a major highway, what matters is how it improves the lives of the people. We’ve paid equal attention to all because they all serve essential needs.”
Wike highlighted the potential of improved road access to boost agricultural productivity in rural areas of the FCT. “With these roads, farmers can transport goods, and irrigation becomes viable. These are the foundations of food security,” he added.
Also speaking, Prince Chibudom Nwuche, former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, expressed admiration for the pace and quality of development under Wike’s leadership, describing the transformation as “nothing short of remarkable.” “Abuja is coming alive again – not just the city centre but the rural parts too,” Nwuche said.
“Not just the city centre but the rural parts too. We saw farmlands with water and coal potential. This is how you build a balanced, modern capital,” he noted.
As the FCT prepares for a series of project commissioning events to mark two years of the Tinubu administration, the inspections demonstrate the administration’s commitment to inclusive development across the Territory. The government’s vision for a modern, balanced capital is taking shape, with a focus on unlocking the potential of rural areas and promoting economic growth.
