.As Wabara expresses shock over Delta Gov’s decision
CYRIL MBAH, Abuja
The Progressive Governors Forum Chairman, Chief Hope Uzodinma, who is also the Governor of Imo State, has stated that more governors from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) will soon dump the party and join the ruling All Progressives Congress, (APC) before the end of the year.
Uzodimma made this assertion while briefing newsmen on the outcome of the emergency meeting of the APC leadership with defectors from Delta State held in Abuja on Saturday night.
Although Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State was absent, the meeting was attended by Governors Bassey Otu (Cross River), Monday Okpebholo (Edo), Usman Ododo (Kogi) and Abiodun Oyebanji (Ekiti) States and the APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje.
Gov. Uzodinma said the tide of defection, which has been moving in favour of the APC, will continue and lead to the complete disintegration of the opposition block in the next election.
The governor also hoped that the old and new members of the APC in Delta State would accept to integrate harmoniously and work together in the interest of the people and the party..
He remarked that, “the tide is moving and people are joining the APC and there will be no end to it, to the extent that I’m sure even you will soon join us. You must have heard that our party in Delta State is growing from strength to strength.”
Commenting specifically on why Governor Oborevwori was absent, Uzodinma said, “No, the meeting was not designed to have the Governor of Delta State in attendance. If you want to see us with the Delta State Governor, come to Asaba tomorrow.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Adolphus Wabara, while addressing the recent defections of the party’s 2023 vice-presidential candidate, Ifeanyi Okowa, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, and several other key figures in Delta State to the All Progressives Congress (APC) described the decision as shocking.
Senator Wabara maintained that although there is no cause for alarm over recent exits of politicians from the opposition party, he stressed the PDP would “surely miss” the defectors, but added that their exit would not undermine the party’s chances in the 2027 elections.
He said that although it is shocking, the defections were “a blessing in disguise,” predicting that the APC would eventually suffer internal crises as a result of strange bed fellows converging on the party.
“The PDP will have the last laugh because soon, the APC will implode. Those defecting will eventually attempt to displace longtime APC members, leading the displaced members to seek refuge in the PDP,” Wabara stated.
The BoT Chairman noted that he was not really surprised by the defections, attributing them to personal ambitions, dwindling faith in the electoral system, and politicians’ desire to secure second terms.
Despite the high-profile exits, Wabara expressed confidence that the ruling APC would not have an easy ride in 2027, suggesting that the electorate, fed up with APC’s governance failures, would exercise their power wisely at the polls.
“It was anticipated, and more defections could still happen. But there’s no need for panic—that’s the nature of politics. ASome defect for a second term bid, others for protection,” he expla w ined.
“This is more about leaders moving, not the grassroots, and even then, not every leader is switching sides. Nigerians—not political parties—will determine the 2027 presidential election,” Wabara emphasized.
