The National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, Rumuola Unit in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, has called on security agencies to intervene over an alleged threat of strike action by rival transport groups, despite a subsisting court order.
The Union raised the alarm over what it described as flagrant disobedience to an interim injunction issued by the Rivers State High Court, restraining the defendants from interfering with its activities and functions pending the determination of the substantive suit.
The order, according to a statement signed by the Union’s Chairman, Comrade Julius Uzoma, was granted by Hon. Justice Sobere Biambo.
The NURTW Rumuola Unit leader in the statement said the call became necessary following alleged threats by the defendants to embark on strike action, which it considers a deliberate attempt to disrupt its lawful operations and undermine the court order.
The defendants in the suit are Christopher Ezeali, Registered Trustees of Commercial Drivers Welfare Association, Registered Trustees of Drivers Welfare Club Nigeria, Registered Trustees of Self Employed Drivers Welfare Initiative, and Rivers Drivers Cooperative Union Limited.
According to the statement, the planned strike, if carried out, would amount to contempt of court and a threat to peace and order in the transport sector.
The NURTW Rumuola Unit, however, called the Nigeria Police Force and other relevant security agencies to take note of the actions and utterances attributed to the defendants and to ensure that law and order are maintained.
The Union urged all parties to respect the rule of law and allow the judicial process to run its full course, rather than resorting to self-help or actions capable of causing a breakdown of law and order.
It reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing the matter through lawful and constitutional means, and reassured members of the public and its members of its dedication to peace, legality and orderly operation of transport activities in Rumuola and Rivers State at large.
