States owe NECO over N1billion -Registrar

The Registrar and Chief Executive, National Examination Council, NECO, Professor Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, has decried the low payment of outstanding NECO fees as promised by some state government.

Wushishi, who stated this in Jalingo, the Taraba State capital, while monitoring the​conduct of the ongoing NECO examination centers, said it was what the examination body generated that it was used to pay salaries of staff and other liabilities.

“Federal Government is not funding us; we pay salaries and other liabilities from what we get. If our billion out there are not paid, running the entire system might not easy. We are the ​one sustaining ourselves through the registration of candidates. And it is not good for the sustainability of the examination body if states refused to pay what they are owing us”, he said.

He stressed that NECO has over 4,000 staff who must be paid at the end of every month, appealing to the state Governors to urgently offset the billions they are owing NECO.

He said the sit-at-home directive by the indigenous people of Biafra IPOB did not have any effect on​the ongoing NECO examination in the South East.

“They realised that the sit-at-home directive would not do good to ​the children. And they also discovered that their agitation must not affect the future of their children”, he noted.

He assured Nigerians that he would do his best and bring new innovations that will make NECO to be the best examination body in the country.

He expressed happiness on the way Centers are conducting the NECO Examinations in the state.

Some of the Schools visited are, Federal Government Girls College and Raddai Metropolitan Schools all in Jalingo.

Speaking shortly after the inspection, the Proprietor of Raddai Metropolitan Schools, Joel Gilenya, appreciated NECO for the visit and recognizing the school as one of its Centers.

He disclosed that the School has qualified Teachers for Nursery, Primary and Secondary School that are handling all subjects.

“Even from the seating arrangement you can see that Coach them how to write Examinations from JSS3 and SS3, we have the best standard. We have been writing this type of Examinations for more than Four years now. We started this School in 2013 and we are trust God that by 2025 -2030 the sky is our limit”, Gilenya said.

He further disclosed that he have a vision of establishing a higher Institution.

“Between now and 2025-2030 God’s willing, I have a vision of establishing a Polytechnic or a University.

“I have a vision of establishing more than Secondary School, so as to have Nursery, Primary, Secondary School and a Higher Institution – he said.
