Stakeholders seek empowerment of girl-child

Cyril Mbah, Abuja

Stakeholders have called for urgent and sustained action to dismantle barriers preventing Nigerian girls from accessing quality education, essential skills and leadership opportunities.

The call was made at EMPOWERHER Cohort 2 event, organised to commemorate the International Day of the Girl-Child, with emphasis on protecting vulnerable girls and equipping them to shape their future.

Speaking on the theme “Know Her. Build Her. Empower Her,” keynote speaker Madam Enenede Idusuyi said poverty, insecurity, unequal access to education and harmful social practices continue to undermine the development of many girls.

She stressed that empowering the girl-child requires listening to her needs, investing in her potential and creating opportunities for her to thrive.

The address highlighted education, digital literacy, vocational training, financial literacy, mentorship and effective child protection as critical tools for addressing challenges facing girls.

It also called for targeted support for girls affected by poverty, disability, displacement, exploitation and insecurity.

Idusuyi outlined three priorities: strengthening support for vulnerable girls, creating pathways to self-reliance through education and skills development, and building sustainable partnerships among government institutions, development partners, civil society and private sector.

She urged parents, traditional and religious leaders, programme organisers and development partners to promote policies that protect girls, challenge harmful practices and support their development.

Organisers of EMPOWERHER Cohort 2 were encouraged to sustain the initiative through structured mentorship, practical training and follow-up programmes, while girls were urged to take education seriously, acquire new skills, seek trusted mentors and pursue ambitions with confidence.

Stakeholders were challenged to translate commitments into measurable action, noting that true success of the initiative would be reflected in lives transformed and opportunities created for girls.
