SON to roll out new standards for Nigeria’s oil & gas sector

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) said it has concluded plans to reveal about 35 new ISO standards for the nation’s oil and gas industry.

At the batch B Technical Committee (TC) meeting for Corrosion Inhibition Standards, Director General of SON, Farouk Salim said the purpose of the TC meeting was to increase generated revenue in the oil and gas industry by capturing details on standard requirements for metal corrosion inhibition, enhancing regulation, certification, and speedy service delivery.

Salim who was represented by the Group Head Chemtech, SON, Mrs. Theresa Ojomo said the decision will keep the oil and gas sector relevant in the international market and improve the rate of foreign exchange while stating the effect of the oil and gas sector on Nigeria’s foreign exchange. . Emphasis was made on the need to harmonise practices in various sectors of the economy.

He added: “This Technical Committee meeting is for the adoption of 35 ISO Standards for Nigerian use and its benefits are enormous for the Nigerian Oil and Gas Industry.

“A total of 35 standards were adopted and they include, ISO 3233-1 2019 part 1-3 paints and varnishes Determination of percentage volume of non-volatile matter, IS0 19097-1 2018 part 1 -2 Accelerated Life Test method of Mixed Metal Oxide Anode for Catholic Protection, ISO 13847: 2013 Petroleum and natural gas industries- pipelines transportation systems to name but a few.”

The SON Boss acknowledged and appreciated the Chairman, Vice-Chairman of the Nigerian Corrosion Association, and stakeholders at the meeting.

Further stating that all the standards adopted are to be approved by the Nigeria Standard Council for the certification of professionals in the sector .The new standards will foster trade and increase  the national  benefit from trading in standard products under the African Continental Free Trade Area .
