Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 26-year-old man, Kosisochukwu Edward Ibekwe, in connection with the murder of 23-year-old nursing student, Miss Vivian Chilaka, in Alor, Idemili South Local Government Area of the state.
Chilaka was reportedly murdered on June 14, 2026, in an incident that sparked public concern and prompted investigations by security agencies.
The latest development was contained in a statement issued on Saturday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, who said Ibekwe was arrested on September 4 following credible and actionable information received by the Command.
According to the police, preliminary investigations indicated that the suspect allegedly gained access to the building by climbing the fence with the aid of a ladder, with the initial intention of sexually assaulting the deceased.
The Command said a struggle subsequently ensued between Ibekwe and Chilaka, during which he allegedly used a knife to stab her, resulting in her death.
The police further disclosed that the suspect had allegedly made revelations linking him to other similar incidents in the community, adding that the claims were being subjected to thorough investigation and corroboration.
The development also clears the landlord who had earlier come under suspicion following the murder.
The Command said the landlord had been exonerated in the course of the investigation and urged members of the public to disregard earlier suspicions against him.
The police said Ibekwe remained in custody while investigations continued, particularly into his alleged involvement in other related criminal incidents.
The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, commended residents of Alor for their cooperation, patience and support throughout the investigation.
He specifically appreciated members of the community who provided timely and useful information which, according to the Command, contributed to the breakthrough.
CP Oji Ama assured the public that the police would continue to pursue all credible leads and ensure that anyone found culpable was brought to justice in accordance with the law.
The Commissioner reiterated the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property, strengthening public confidence in policing and ensuring that perpetrators of violent crimes do not escape justice.
