The Rivers State Police Command has arrested staff of a hotel in Eagle Island, Port Harcourt, alongside some guests, over the suspicious death of a man in his 20s.
The deceased, identified as Okorite Charles reportedly died after a fall from an upper floor of the hotel where he had lodged with friends, an incident that sparked protest and tension in the area.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Agabe Blessing Karbolo, who confirmed the development, said preliminary findings indicate the deceased was allegedly pushed from the upper floor of the facility.
She stated that Charles was rushed to a hospital immediately after the incident, where a medical doctor on duty confirmed him dead.
According to Karbolo, the situation escalated when the deceased’s friends returned to the hotel and staged a protest, drawing a crowd and threatening public peace.
“The victim’s friends came to the hotel and commenced a protest, which attracted a crowd and threatened to disrupt the peace of the area.
“Upon receipt of the information, police operatives promptly mobilised to the scene and successfully brought the situation under control, preventing further breakdown of law and order.
“The hotel staff on duty at the time of the incident, as well as the victim’s friends who were present with him, were arrested for questioning and investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death,” she said.
The PPRO added that the police have temporarily restricted operations at the hotel pending the outcome of investigations.
Meanwhile, the deceased’s brother, Mr. Obomate, has questioned the circumstances surrounding his brother’s death.
He alleged that doctors at the hospital where Charles was taken observed what appeared to be a stab wound on his stomach. He further claimed that the family suspects the deceased may have been struck on the neck with an object.
The Police Command said investigations are ongoing to unravel the circumstances surrounding Charles’ death and to determine if any criminal offence was committed.
It assured that those found culpable will be made to face the full weight of the law.
