Plateau injects over N2.6bn to drive urban water infrastructure

Daniel Dauda, Jos

Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Mutfwang has confirmed that his administration injected a whopping sum of over N2.6 billion counterpart funding to drive urban water supply project.

Governor Mutfwang acknowledged this significant commitment demonstrates their determination to ensure that development interventions translate into tangible improvements in the lives of Plateau citizens.

The governor made the revelation as he officially declared open a two-day 2nd Semester 2026 National Urban Water Sector Reform Project Coordination and Review Workshop, held at the Crispan Hotel Jos.

He said the workshop provides an important platform where strategic policy, technical expertise and practical implementation can converge to address the challenges confronting Nigeria’s urban water sector.

According to Mutfwang, “water is far more than a public utility, it is the lifeblood of economic productivity, public health, human dignity and social stability.

“As our cities continue to grow rapidly, the pressure on existing water infrastructure and municipal supply networks is becoming increasingly intense, this reality demands that we move beyond conventional approaches and embrace reforms that are strategic, sustainable, accountable and responsive to the realities of our growing urban populations.

“As leaders and public administrators, our responsibility is not simply to provide infrastructure, but to build systems that can deliver efficiently, consistently and sustainably over the long term”, he stated.

Governor Mutfwang further explained that his administration considers water security a fundamental pillar of modern governance and human development, as they were committed to strengthening the institutions, infrastructure and systems required to expand access to potable water across the State.

“Through the Jos Water Services Corporation, in collaboration with relevant ministries, departments and agencies, we have continued to pursue critical interventions aimed at improving water production, treatment and distribution.

“These interventions include the expansion of municipal reticulation networks across the state, the rehabilitation of the Yelwa Water Treatment Plant; the reticulation of the Mangu Regional Water Scheme; and the rehabilitation and construction of water infrastructure in Bokkos, Langtang North, Langtang South and Wase.

“We are also undertaking the rehabilitation of two major water treatment facilities—the Yakubu Gowon Water Treatment Plant and the Laminga Water Treatment Plant, with support from the AFD”, Mutfwang mentioned.

Daily Champion reports that a two-day delegates workshop aims to deepen accountability, peer learning, technical coordination, problem-solving, and strategic realignment in the water sector.
