…Says govt’s “egregious failure to protect lives unacceptable.”

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the recent killing of seven innocent citizens at a mining site in Wat, Plateau State, describing the frequent waste of human lives as a “brutal and senseless act” that must end.

The party’s Plateau State Publicity Secretary of the party, Hon. Choji Felix Dalyop, said in a statement sent to newsmen in Abuja that the government’s failure to protect human life and ensure basic security for the people is “egregious” and has eroded public confidence.

The PDP noted that the recurrent incidents of attacks and killings have become a testament to the ongoing security crisis and the government’s lack of pro-activeness, pointing out that every life lost under the current administration puts democracy under siege.

While asserting that the government’s primary responsibility is to provide security and uphold the rule of law, the party stated that the repeated incidents of unprovoked violence in Plateau State demonstrate a severe dereliction of duty.

The PDP recalled a 2025 report by a fact-finding committee, which indicated that attackers often come from neighbouring states and stressed that Plateau State can not afford to treat such atrocities as business as usual.

The party demanded a transparent and impartial investigation into the killings, with findings made public without delay and for the perpetrators to be swiftly brought to justice.

The PDP also called on the government to develop and communicate a clear plan to address the root causes of insecurity and prevent further loss of innocent lives, warning that rhetoric and empty condemnations alone will not suffice.

The party said it stands in solidarity with the families of the victims and affected communities and urged national and international communities to monitor the situation and take decisive action.

The statement, which was captioned “This brutality and senseless killings must stop.

A demand for immediate action and accountability,” said in part: “We have noted with great concern and have issued a strong condemnation of the tragic killing of seven innocent citizens in their prime, in a mining site in Wat of Kuru District, Jos South LGA, Plateau state, on Wednesday, 21st January, 2026, by the enemies of the state.

“The citizens are holding the government accountable for the egregious failure to protect human life and ensure basic security among others.

The senseless loss of life as contained herein is a gloomy testament to the ongoing security crisis and the government lack of pro-activeness and apparent indifference to the issues of safety and welfare of the very people it was elected to serve.

“Every life lost under the watch of this government erodes the public’s confidence and puts our democracy under siege.

It is, therefore, a dangerous course of action that not only endangers our hard-won democracy over time but deepens mistrust and elevates thematic and systematic security threats in Plateau State, the home of peace and tourism.

“The party asserts that the government’s primary responsibility is to provide security and uphold the rule of law.

The repeated incidents of unprovoked violence and the failure to bring perpetrators to justice demonstrate a severe dereliction of duty as contained in (Section 14(2) of 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended.

“You recall in 2025, a report of the fact-finding committee on the incessant killings in Plateau State, constituted by Governor Caleb M. Mutfwang, has indicated that attackers often come from neighbouring states.

“The report stressed that 420 communities were attacked, thousands of people mainly consisting of women, children, aged displaced, and nearly 12,000 lives lost.

Plateau State, cannot afford to treat such atrocities as business as usual, and the violence in the state is well coordinated, the motives deliberate, and the sequences devastating.

“We demand a transparent and impartial investigation into the killings, with findings made public without delay.

“The perpetrators must be swiftly brought to justice to ensure accountability and serve as a deterrent against future violence.

“The government must develop and communicate a clear, actionable plan to address the root causes of insecurity and prevent further loss of innocent lives,” the statement concluded.
