The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, has described the Federal High Court ruling in Ibadan as “academic”, saying it doesn’t affect the party’s Ibadan Convention outcome.
Turaki made this remark at a press conference on Friday, where he also announced the party’s decision to speedily appeal the judgment.
The court had declined to grant an order of mandamus sought by the PDP to compel INEC to recognize the Ibadan Convention.
Turaki criticized the ruling, saying the judge granted reliefs that were neither requested nor argued by any parties.
He stated that the PDP has filed a Notice of Appeal and a Motion for Stay of Execution, and is determined to pursue the matter diligently to its logical conclusion. Turaki emphasized that the judgment conflicts with subsisting orders and previous judgments of courts of coordinate jurisdiction.
The Ibadan Convention produced the Turaki-led National Working Committee, which the PDP insists remains “legally intact, firmly in place, and fully committed to the ongoing rebirth” of the party.
Turaki, a senior advocate, urged PDP members and supporters to remain calm and resolute, saying there’s no cause for alarm, as the party’s rebirth movement is “steadily on course”, he added.
The PDP sees this judgment as part of its broader political struggle ahead of the 2027 general elections. The party is working to resolve internal disputes and present a united front.
Turaki emphasized that the final outcome is what ultimately matters, saying the judgment represents “one of the judicial bends along our journey.”
The PDP is committed to pursuing the matter to its logical conclusion in accordance with the law, he concluded.
