New Yenagoa City underway through multiple infrastructure

ELIZABETH  VINCENT, Yenagoa

The Bayelsa State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Hon. Teibowei Moses, has highlighted the massive infrastructural development currently transforming the new Yenagoa City, where multiple construction projects are underway.

Speaking with journalists, Hon. Moses expressed optimism over the ambitious road network being developed, noting that most of the roads were designed as dual carriageways. He disclosed that roads 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 within the new city are all dual-carriage roads.

“I can confidently say that about ninety-five percent of the roadwork is already completed,” he said, commending the commitment and efficiency of the construction teams handling the projects.

Recalling his days as a Permanent Secretary when the contracts for the roads were first awarded, Hon. Moses said the projects have been carefully planned to ensure full connectivity.

“As we approach the completion phase, I can confirm that alongside the dual carriage roads, there are also single carriage roads being constructed to complement the network from road 1 to road 6,” he added.

He further explained that the city’s layout was strategically designed to support organized development. Between roads 2 and 3, he said, several plots of land have been set aside for development, while roads 4, 5, and 6 also contain well-planned plots designed to promote a communal atmosphere. Supporting facilities are being incorporated to enhance livability in the new urban settlement.

Hon. Moses also cited Governor Douye Diri’s vision for expanding road connectivity, disclosing that plans are underway to extend road 1 to the Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facility—an effort that will not only enhance connectivity but also stimulate economic growth in Bayelsa.

On other projects, the commissioner announced that the Angiama–Oporoma road bridge will be ready for use by November or December, allowing motorists to finally drive to Oporoma. He listed other ongoing projects such as the Nembe–Brass road (now in its second phase), the Polaku–Sabagria road, and sand-filling works at Binns, which are scheduled for launch next month.

According to him, all these projects are being executed by Bayelsa engineers and surveyors from the state ministry without the involvement of external contractors. He also mentioned ongoing works on the East–West Road, Okoloba–Ekeremor axis, Udoro, Peretorugbene, Agbura, Oxbow Lake, and Akaba–Ikoli road.

While addressing the rising cost of road projects, Hon. Moses explained that inflation has significantly affected construction costs. He revealed that the initial Nembe–Brass road contract awarded at ₦57 billion later rose to ₦157 billion for the second phase due to inflation.

“This administration has done more than any government in terms of road infrastructure. Sometimes when I hear frivolous statements, I just laugh. The government is working. We don’t make noise; we let people see the results,” he said.

Hon. Moses reassured the public of Governor Diri’s unwavering commitment to infrastructure.

“I can assure you that Governor Douye Diri is determined to see these projects through. By February, we expect the major road links to be fully operational, paving the way for improved access and development in Yenagoa City.”
