SELYA YARNAP, Bauchi
Bauchi Correctional Centre has released 13 inmates serving various jail terms at the Centre after the fines imposed on them were settled by a celebrant on his Birthday.
A Nigerian who is based outside of the country, Uchechukwu Emmanuel Obioha, popularly called “Papiwater_DXB”, paid the fines amounting to the sum of N1million to mark his birthday.
Represented by his friend, Taye Abdullahi, who coordinated the release, he said that there are plans to enrol the convicts into different skills acquisition centres like shoemaking, carpentry, plumbing and others.
According to him, the gesture was aimed at ensuring that those who had no reason to be incarcerated were given another opportunity to try life again outside the walls of the prison.
The celebrant wished that all those who regained their liberty will make positive use of the opportunity posterity has given them by living the lives of good citizens as they get reunited with the society and their family members.
Speaking on behalf of the freed inmates, Musa Ahmad, a 30-year-old tailor said that he ventured into petty stealing when he lost his means of livelihood –a tailoring shop to the recent demolition of illegal structures along the roads by the Bauchi State Government.
The State Government had last year issued a notice to illegal shop owners and structures on major roads within the major cities across the state, which were demolished early this year.
He said that he was arrested by the Police for stealing and was sentenced to six months’ jail.
“I am a resident of Kofar Gombe, I’m a tailor,r but since the government demolished our shops, we are left with nothing”, Musa explained.
He said,”Feeding has been so difficult for us. But I thank God for everything, I don’t wish to go back there again. I thank the man who paid for my fine.”
The beneficiaries thanked their benefactor, saying that without his intervention, they would have remained in prison to serve out their terms.
