Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu,says his successor will continue with the ongoing Lagos developmental plan, which has been running for 27 years.
Sanwo-Olu stated that in 1999, President Bola Tinubu, during his tenure as governor of Lagos crafted a blueprint for the state which every governor that took over power followed, including him.
The governor spoke while delivering the centenary lecture of the Yoruba Tennis Club Onikan, titled— Democracy, Governance and the Lagos Spirit: A century of excellence on Tuesday.
“It’s been twenty-seven years now, and we have not departed from the original vision. I don’t know of any other State in Nigeria that has maintained such fidelity and continuity.
“I served in those administrations before I led one, and I watched the plan being drawn. In a country where every new government is tempted to begin afresh, and tear up the predecessor’s plans, Lagos chose to continue. I inherited a plan, not a blank page – and my successor will similarly inherit the plan.
“As politicians we must move away from the tendency to fixate on four-year election cycles, and towards being comfortable with long-term thinking. We must be prepared to plant trees whose fruits we will not be around to enjoy,” he said.
Governor Sanwo-Olu praised the 43 pioneers of the Yoruba Tennis Club who laid a legacy for generations to come in 1926, as the club now has over 2000 members.
He urged the club members to embrace unity and diversity, as well as encourage young people to join and be involved.
In his address, the Chairman of the club, Chief Olawumi Gasper said the Yoruba Tennis Club and Lagos share a remarkable history.
Gasper maintained that members of the club have contributed to the economic, professional, cultural and civic development of Lagos.
“We see our relationship with Lagos not simply as historical, but as a continuing partnership in building the future.
The chairman charged members of the club to uphold the values set by founding fathers and pass on the good heritage.
“Our responsibility is to give the future possibility. That is the challenge before us. As we move forward, let the Yoruba Tennis Club remain a place where excellence is expected, character is valued and fellowship is cherished. Let us continue to produce men whose achievements are matched by integrity.
“Let us continue to build relationships that extend beyond the Club into our communities and our nation. Let us ensure that our heritage is not simply something we celebrate, but something we actively transmit to those who will follow. Because the true test of a legacy is not how proudly we remember it. It is how responsibly we pass it on,” he stated.
For a better society
