Lagos lawmaker urges traditional rulers to support govt for seamless governance

A member of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Hon Stephen Ogundipe, has urged traditional rulers in the State to collaborate with the State government in achieving seamless operation of governance.

Ogundipe made the call during a three-day treat at Sheraton Hotels, Ikeja, organized by the State government for traditional rulers across the State.

The theme of the gathering is ‘Strengthening Traditional Institutions through Collaboration for Growth and Peaceful Co-Existence in Lagos State.’

The retreat is an intentional platform created to harmonize the voices of our rich heritage with the policies and vision of the State Government—particularly as it aligns with our T.H.E.M.E.S. Plus Development Agenda.

Ogundipe who is the Chairman House Committee on Information and Strategy, said, “The House is yours because you elected us as your representatives. We don’t joke with any issue that has to do with traditional institutions.”

He, however, called for unity among the royal fathers, saying their cooperation in ensuring smooth administration of justice is paramount.

“What we are doing here today is very crucial, especially as regards land disputes. Many a time, some of these issues are to be resolved by the traditional rulers, but they still find their way to the Assembly.

“But we urge you to always uphold truth. It is with truth that we can amicably resolve issues for the progress of the State.”

In his welcome address, the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy Affairs and Rural Development, Mr Bolaji Robert said, “As the custodians of our people’s heritage and values, our traditional rulers occupy a unique and strategic position — not just as cultural icons, but also as key partners in governance. You serve as vital bridges between the grassroots and Government, and your roles in maintaining peace, resolving conflicts, and promoting community development cannot be over-emphasised.”

Robert added, “Over the next few days, we will engage in stimulating discussions and expert-led presentations aimed at addressing some of the key challenges affecting the traditional institution and our communities.

“These sessions are designed to equip us with tools and strategies for upholding the dignity of the traditional institution, conflict resolution and sustainable development — all of which are critical for the continuous growth of our beloved State.”

He therefore urged the participant to be fully involved and contribute insights, share experiences and connect with one another, noting “Your wisdom, drawn from years of service to your people, is a rich resource that can shape policies, programmes, and progress across the State.”

Speaking on behalf of other royal fathers, HRM the Ayangbure of Ikorodu land, Oba Kabiru Sotobi, urged the State government to make the meeting a quarterly affair.

While appealing to the constitution review committees of the National Assembly to accommodate the 37 Local Council Development Area LCDAs in the constitution, the royal father stated that “If you look at Kano and Kaduna, you would see that Lagos is being shortchanged.”
