Worried by the high rate of poverty in Nigeria, a Non –Governmental charity Organization (NGO),Dona- Maureen Foundation has urged the Federal Government to take indigent Nigerians into consideration when initiating policies for the country.

Dona- Maureen Foundation lamented that the number of the poor were increasing on daily basis due to government policies which allegedly favor the rich ,stressing that the Federal Government could reverse the trend by initiating policies that would also favor the grassroots which are made up of the bulk of Nigerians.

The director and founder of the organization, Dr. Maureen Umemuo Umeakuewulu stated this at Igbo Ukwu in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State during a charity event organized by the foundation, which attracted over 1,500 widows and handicapped persons from across Anambra State , yesterday.

The foundation noted that distribution of food items and other materials to the poor during electioneering campaigns, yuletides and other occasions was not enough to overcome poverty , stressing that it was only positive policies of government that could solve the problems of poverty in the land .

It called on the rich to also assist the poor and partner with government in alleviating poverty in Nigeria.

“It is worrisome that a greater number of Nigerians are helpless, hapless and wallowing in poverty .It s only the government that could initiate policies that would favor every Nigerian. The rich should also assist in alleviating poverty in the land. Giving out food items during campaigns and on occasions like Christmas won’t sole the problem”, Dr. Maureen said.
